HERNIA SURGERY REPORT What a title for a report, but, this has been my situation for the last 4+ weeks, change that to 12 weeks. You may recall that I had not one, but two groin strains from my exploits at our summer youth camps … one in Montenegro and the other in Romania which was much worse. On August 24 I had a MRI which didn’t really help solve the problem and the pain was much worse. Finally, my primary care doctor sent me to an urologist, a sharp young lady, who diagnosed the hernia. She immediately dialed the surgeon on her cell phone to set up an appointment. Within a few days the young surgeon, age 35, told me that I needed hernia surgery. All of these young doctors were very attentive and proactive ready to help me. Finally, after a couple of delays I had the surgery on October 15. I cannot believe that it was done as an outpatient surgery … I felt like death warmed over … pain on the Richter scale in my opinion. But, the Lord helped me although the first two weeks were really tough. Now after four weeks? I’m still moving slowly and doing some walking outside for 10 minutes at a time, but, I’m doing much better. After visiting my surgeon a couple of days ago I can share that I have about another four weeks of recovery, but, he thinks I will be in good shape to go to Costa Rica to speak in youth camps there in January. He released me from his care telling me that the surgery is holding very well after I passed the “cough test”. He was so pleased explaining that he could not feel any pressure at all in the area of my surgery. He said that I will have more pain, but, that it will slowly improve. God sent me to an excellent young surgeon. I love hanging out with young people. Sharp, talented, proactive … what a blessing for me! BEHIND THE SCENES WORK This slow down in my life as I recover from my surgery has been very productive especially the last 10 days. I was not very productive the first 15 to 18 days after the surgery because I was so miserable suffering from pain. What a help for me that I could finally sleep on my right side on the 25th day after my surgery. Sleeping in only one position, on my left side, for 25 days became very tedious. Basically, I only took naps. Much better now! This helped me become more productive with behind the scenes work such as calendar planning for 2015, working on the ministry budget to submit to our Board of Directors for approval, organizing teams to come to our camps in Romania and Montenegro, mentoring by Skype phone calls and emails, digging into the Word and spending quality time in prayer. Some incredible things are happening because of the slow down and I am quite excited about this. Suffice to say that preparation time for all public ministry is vital and crucial. COSTA RICA: SOMEBODY HAS TO ENDURE THE NICE WEATHER God willing, I will be in Costa Rica in January speaking to teenagers in youth camps and connecting with church planters speaking in their churches. Hey, somebody has to endure the nice weather down there! January is their peak “summer” season and young people are on break from school. They return to school in February. So, January is prime time to hang out with teenagers in Costa Rica. Pray for these meetings. I will be speaking to Costa Rican Indians in the mountains during one week. After meeting a couple of top notch young Indians in January 2014 I can hardly wait to meet their friends. They are short in stature with orangish olive skin and jet black hair. I’m told that they are very attentive for the most part. I will be speaking to them during the first full week in January 2015. Can’t wait!! Our director for LIFE Costa Rica, Cris Vidaechea, was in the States for three weeks recently renewing friendships and asking churches and individuals to kindly consider supporting him, his family an his ministry. All I can tell you is that I really believe in this young man in his mid 30s … to the extent that I write a check for his mission support. I kindly ask others to join me supporting this fine young man. See, I told you that I love to hang out with young people … so much potential! Your investment will make a difference as we make plans to have groups come from the States to do evangelism and as we hope to launch our first LIFE Costa Rica youth camp in January 2016. Pray much for this! SASHA IN MONTENEGRO IS COMING ON STRONG Speaking of young adults loaded with potential I highly recommend Sasha Olah who is representing our work at LIFE Montenegro. He is in his early 20s [Oh, how I remember my 20s … what a special time in my life] and he is really sharp. Well, I’m going to tell you that I write another check to support this young man and we need some more people to follow my example and the example of 3 or 4 other wonderful people who support him. Great soccer player … smooth as silk on the soccer field and can burst with speed at just the right moment to overwhelm his defender. Sasha uses his sports skills to build relationships so he can do evangelism and discipleship. He is doing follow up work on our campers who attend Camp Monty. Why don’t you consider writing a check every month with support designated for Cris in Costa Rica and a portion for Sasha in Montenegro? They are worthy of your help and you can make a difference in two sections of the world. You could do this through your online banking site to set it up in bill pay to do this automatically each month or go to our website to use Pay Pal. Pray about this if you would be so kind. Thank you for praying about this. Wrapping up this Update thinking about you, dear friend, and giving a prayer of thanksgiving to God for our friendship. So thankful for you. I just prayed for you. May the Lord bless you! —Solution Found —Major Developments in Montenegro SOLUTION FOUND Earlier I wrote to you that I suffered a serious groin strain, actually two of them, one in Montenegro and the other in Romania. The pain has been horrific the last seven weeks, but, a solution has been found. A couple of days ago I met with a specialist who told me that I have two hernias needing surgery. She immediately called her surgeon friend who allowed me to come for an examination later that day. The surgeon asked me to cough deeply, then, make a groaning sound as though I was lifting something heavy. He confirmed the diagnosis and talked to me about scheduling a double hernia surgery agreeing on October 8. What a relief! Finally, I know what my problem is and that there is a solution. Recovery time may take up to six weeks or so due to this being a double hernia surgery. This means that my next trip to Romania and Montenegro has been postponed. Everyone there needs me to get healthy again, so, I will do what is necessary to prepare for the long term. Looking forward to 2015 being an extraordinary year! God really used me in both doctor offices with both of the doctors and their nurses. They listened with great interest when I told them what I do with disadvantaged young people, about the loss of Lynne and how God has helped me. One nurse with tears in her eyes listened to my story then, she shared her story of loss. The first doctor told me that she had never met anyone like me and that she is so impressed. She gave me top quality service. The surgeon came in and sat down without saying a word … his nurse standing nearby. Finally, he said, “Your story is all over my office.” I glanced at the nurse who looked away with a little smile on her face. “I don’t know quite what to do with a real, bonafide missionary who has a story like yours.” After he asked me various medical questions … what I eat, drink, do or don’t do … he turned away from his laptop and said, “How long have you been a missionary?” “I’m in my 37th year” He was quiet as he shook his head [I guess he is about 36 years old]. “Can I be like you when I grow up?” I said, “You sure can. Let’s plan your first mission trip.” Big smiles. He gave me first class service. I’m in good hands … he is really sharp. Pray for successful surgery on October 8. He thinks that I have a lot of damage, so, he described three surgical methods with each method being more invasive. Recovery time will depend upon which method he ultimately uses. This is outpatient surgery and he expects this to be successful. It’s in God’s hands so, thank you for your prayers. MAJOR DEVELOPMENTS IN MONTENEGRO Camp Monty has been a huge success since its inception in 2007 because God led us to this needy country and He has blessed this work. Many have come to Christ, but, follow-up is always an issue for any mission in any country. It’s true for a church in the United States. Simply put, discipleship is hard work. But, it is a necessary work. We have had a dream of having a coffee house or youth club that would be open for young people to come together for fellowship or simply hanging out together with some of our staff. Bible studies, special speakers, evangelistic events and informal get togethers would be part of the focus. Dear friend, this is close to becoming a reality. Rick DeYoung and Jim Compton were over there last week and they were delighted to see God open doors very quickly. Danijel Petkovski has played a key role in Camp Monty in recent years. He leads a ministry to university students in Niksic, Montenegro. He loves teens and has helped us with some of the follow up work for our campers. He also has a vision for a youth center, so, we are partnering together so that we can reach out to university students, teenagers and children. Our staff member, Sasha Olah, in his early 20s is quite excited about this. It is good for him to work Danijel who is around 30. A couple of the men involved in the local church with whom we partner are very interested in being involved so, things are coming together very quickly. Rick DeYoung, Director of Camp Monty, phoned that a new building that all of us, including me, looked at this summer, is nearing competition so they called the phone number posted on the window. Would you believe that the owner’s son attends Camp Monty? He was there in five minutes! Things usually are not moving this quickly in Eastern Europe. God is at work! Within minutes I was viewing a video made by Jim Compton listening to the negotiation. This summer my hands and face were next to the window as I looked in. Now, I was “inside” via the video watching the owner agree to the reasonable terms! My heart was soaring!! A family who has helped us at Camp Monty have made an investment in helping to fund this new ministry. But, we need more partners, supporters to help us with this opportunity. $800 per month would be help us cover the rent, utilities, refreshments, coffee and tea, supplies and helping with Sasha’s support. Your $25 per month would help to make a difference. $10 per month or $50 per month will help. Can we count on your involvement? —Summer of Contrasts —LIFE Costa Rica on the Move —Lynne Murphy Memorial Fund —LIFE Romania: The Turks! SUMMER OF CONTRASTS Incredible youth camps in Europe this summer … many decisions for Christ with 291 in Romania and 25 in Montenegro. Would you believe that 96 out of 102 children in one week of camp at LIFE Romania came to Christ when I gave the invitation? It was an awesome sight to behold! It seemed that all 96 wanted to stand right next to Mr. Eric or Iulian, my translator who is the director of our mission there. They were scrunched in together so tight that if someone would have pushed from one side all of us would have fallen over. It was so, so special! As I keep saying your prayers are so important because God answers your prayers making stories like this possible. Keep praying! The contrast? Last time I wrote to you I told about my issues with high blood pressure. I was in stroke territory with numbers running 235/175 … not good, not at all. Why? Well, think about the stress of losing dear Lynne. Fortunately, a nurse from Mississippi was helping in our camp that week in Romania. She hovered over me nursing me back to health. The Romania doctor prescribed the medicine and it seems to be working great as my blood pressure is almost normal now. So, on the one hand we had many spiritual blessings with so many young people coming to Christ. Then, on the other hand I was a physical wreck. My nurse told me that it will take 4 to 5 weeks to get used to living with lower blood pressure taking that long to start feeling better. She was right! The rest of the contrast story is that when I was in Montenegro getting things ready for Camp Monty and I suffered a severe strain while walking. They say that a strain in the groin area really shuts down athletes. I don’t know how athletic I am, but, it really put a crimp in my mobility. The story is not over … a week later I was back in Romania to finish up the last two weeks of their camp season serving as the evangelist. I was hanging out with some of the young adults teaching them how to throw a frisbee. Their attempts had me chasing their tosses to the left or to the right. After the third run I felt horrific pain … again in the groin area. This time I really did it! When I do something I don’t mess around. I was screaming in pain scaring our camp counselors half to death … couldn’t take a step without this searing, burning pain. So, how am I doing 6+ weeks later? Blood pressure is doing great … the strain problem is still a problem. Four weeks ago I had a CAT scan which revealed that I have five strains, not just one. It also showed that I do not have cancer which could have been a potential cause for the burning pain. Nor, do I have diabetes which would have been another potential cause for the burning sensation. Also, no heart problems, another potential cause. So, some very good news. My barber had this same problem years ago when he was a referee at a football game. It was good to talk with someone who has experienced the same thing. From his response it appears that I have maybe 2 or 3 more months to heal and get over this problem. What a summer of contrasts! LIFE COSTA RICA ON THE MOVE Director Cris Vidaechea is coming to the States to raise his support to get the ministry in Costa Rica up and running … October 11- November 1. Pray that he will be able to raise the funds that he needs to quit his full time job with amazon.com… a giant step for him to take. If you would like to become involved please email me … check my email address at the bottom of this Update. LYNNE MURPHY MEMORIAL FUND Several people have been gracious to donate to this special fund in Lynne’s name. She loved to see needy campers attend our youth camps. She always spent time with many of them to put smiles on their faces and they often remarked how beautiful her smile was. Lynne really connected with them. Would you like to make a difference in the life of a disadvantaged, needy camper? The address and website information is below. Why don’t you put some smiles on some young faces just like Lynne used to do? I am smiling right now as I think about it … LIFE ROMANIA: THE TURKS! Years ago the Ottoman Turks occupied much of Europe for more than two centuries. They returned to Romania this summer … well, not exactly the vicious Ottoman Turks of yesteryear. However, Iulian Avramescu, our director, reports the 23 Turkish children that attended his youth camp one week were totally incorrigible … absolutely out of control. There is a small group of Turkish families living in southern Romania near the border with Bulgaria. Tough situation, refugees, the local government trying to figure out what to do with these people and how to educate the children. These kids would not sit still during the meetings, would not behave and drove the camp counselors out of their minds. When they took them to their rooms the Turkish kids were amazed to see water coming out of the wall … you and I call this a shower. They had never seen a shower in their lives! They walked in with all of their clothes and shoes on … totally amazed at the experience. The counselors helped them remove their clothes explaining how to use a shower. They were taking 7 or 8 showers a day as they marveled at this new experience. Can you believe what you are reading? These kids live in “homes” made out of cornstalks and mud with a piece of tin on the top for a roof … no floors … just dirt … no bathrooms … families of six or eight living in a tiny hut all in the same “room”. Cooking is done outside over open fires. Can you get your mind around this? Think the Lynne Murphy Memorial Fund could make a difference in such lives? I missed all of this because I was in Montenegro at Camp Monty. Iulian was sending emails each day asking for prayer because these kids were turning the camp upside down with their behavior. But, on Thursday night Iulian spoke to the campers giving an invitation to accept Christ. All 23 prayed this prayer! Iulian told me that they were so different this next day! What a difference God can make in young lives. What a wonderful story! Pray for these kids … who knows what God might do in their lives? If only one of them returns to Turkey as an evangelist … think about it and pray. Oh, did you know that the Apostle Paul was born in what is now modern day Turkey? Who would have dreamed that Saul of Tarsus would have been the one who would rock the world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ? Why not again???? Montenegro … Camp Monty 2014 was a huge success. Directed by Rick DeYoung it was a privilege for me to be on hand to watch just how far this camp has come … how much progress has been made. Last year 350 campers … this year around 400. Danijel Petkovski and Rick were our speakers … they were extra special. On Monday night the lead singer from the Bolyki Boys in Budapest, Hungary, Balazs presented a top notch concert. Balazs or Bali is a professional singer who has given concerts from Shanghai, China to Zagreb, Croatia … more than 200 concerts across Europe and Asia. The Montenegrins loved his music and have asked when he will return for another concert. On Wednesday night John McGuinness led a group from Hamilton, NJ, in a concert that was well received by campers and families. Both concerts were open air events and we battled rain delays both nights, but, the delay just added to the anticipation of the audience each night. The movie theater that we rented was packed! Absolutely jam packed full! SRO … Standing Room Only. We had evangelistic meetings there on Tuesday and Thursday evenings with about 30 young people coming to Christ. Sports, sports, sports with basketball, soccer, tennis, American football and baseball attracted many young people along with English language instruction. Parents were lined up to thank me for coming to Montenegro telling me that their teens LOVES Camp Monty and LOVES all of those who came to teach or play sports. What about the groups from the States when they left to return to their homes? Tears! Yes, tears from the Montenegrins and tears shed by the Americans as they left. Stay tuned for more information about how we continue the ministry with this young people from the summer into the fall and winter. Some exciting developments are in the works . . . Romania … I was in Romania for two weeks at Camp MIA led by our director there, Iulian Avramescu, at a site close to Arad, Romania. As for me, I could not speak during the first week as high blood pressure problems laid me low. God knew I would have these problems in that He sent us a group from Senatobia, MS, which included a nurse. She was a great help for me. Right before camp I was in Budapest, Hungary where I visited my Chinese doctor who is board certified in both Hungary and China, western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine. She is very good. She put me on blood pressure medication before I traveled to Romania. Truth being told I was in a bad physical condition. Why? Stress from Lynne’s suffering and passing plus other sources and my weight not being in good control … time for change. After the American nurse at camp treated me she wanted help from a Romania doctor which resulted in my medication being doubled and two more medications were added. Oh boy, what a time. My nurse explained that it would take about four weeks to adjust to living with lower blood pressure. Her prediction is right on target as I’m feeling much better … four weeks later. God helped me do the evangelism during the second week of camp in Romania and many were saved. But, I was very weak. Time to travel to Montenegro. If you would have been traveling with me you would have seen that I could barely move. I asked for assistance in each airport which really helped in Istanbul in their humongous airport. Somehow, some way God helped me survive to make it to Montenegro. I was there for what I call the pre-camp week getting things organized. Much had already been done by locals … a big blessing. Then, our team starting coming from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Tennessee and Florida. During the middle of Camp Monty I started feeling somewhat better. Meanwhile, back in Romania, Iulian, was leading Camp MIA and he had his hands full. 27 Turkish kids who live in a small town in Romania close to the border came to his camp. They were incorrigible kids … undisciplined beyond measure. 10 of them had lice and the counselor were struggling to fight the battle to rid them of lice while trying to get their attention asking them to cooperate. It was a struggle … tough and difficult. Would you believe that these kids are so poor that some of them had never seen a shower before? I’m serious. They were totally amazed watching the water come down from the shower head. To give you a better idea they live in “homes” made out of corn stalks and mud with pieces of tin serving as a roof. We thank God that they received Christ! Iulian and his staff smile we they talk about this, but, you can see the fatigue in their eyes and bodies. These kids wore them out. By the time that I returned from Montenegro to join Iulian in his other camp location close to Bucharest 209, altogether, had come to Christ during the four weeks of Camp MIA. This week I had strength to speak and we saw around 55 of the 63 campers come to Christ. Children’s week … some of the cutest kids in the world are here. We are not finished as we have one more week to go. Be sure to check back for my next Update telling you more exciting details. Before I return to the States I will be with their leadership team for a staff meeting right after the camp ends. Plans are underway for 2015! How am I doing? Much better! Thank you for your prayers. *Summer Camps About To Start *Physical and Spiritual: What is going with me? *On the Road SUMMER CAMPS ABOUT TO START Wrapping up the background work and all preparations for summer camps … creates excitement as I anticipate a wonderful experience in Romania and Montenegro. Can’t wait! Pray as a few last minute details need to be completed. As for me I will be in Romania close to Arad for counselor training and the first two weeks of camp. We have a team coming from Raleigh NC led by a friend who helped us get the camp started in Hungary years ago, George Tissiere. Then, a small group from the northwest corner of Mississippi will be with us during the second week. After that I head to Montenegro to get everything ready for Camp Monty … two weeks there with the second week being Camp Monty 2014. Rick DeYoung will direct the camp while I help in the background, shake hands, give hugs, encourage people and build relationships. We have friends coming from California to Ohio to New Jersey to help us reach the Montenegrin youth. As soon as the dust settles after Camp Monty I will fly back to Romania through Istanbul. The last two weeks of my time there will be in a youth camp about 90 minutes west of Bucharest, the capital. Our team at LIFE Romania will have two weeks close to Arad, then, move to Targoviste for four weeks of youth camp. So, I will join them for their final two weeks. Three groups from Texas will come over during those four weeks in eastern Romania. We are grateful for all those who come. Did I say that I can’t wait? PHYSICAL AND SPIRITUAL: WHAT IS GOING WITH ME? June 8 found me in the same church where we celebrated Lynne’s life six months earlier to the date. I suddenly realized this when I walked into the door. My mind flooded with memories … good ones. Her celebration service [I choose this term rather than a funeral service] was quite an experience, so as I thought about that special day I re-lived it in my mind. Somehow this helped me. Today I received a letter from someone who wrote that what I'm experiencing in my grief is very, very normal. Some advice was given on how to live out the grief or live through it, experience it and be at peace with the process. Very helpful. God is so good! What I mean is that although going through a tough experience is painful, yet, God helps a person through the hard times. We learn things that we would never learn in any other way. God sees us all the way through the process and we become better ... we mature. Somehow, some way, this is good for us. I don't resent what God has done or what He is doing. Not at all. No anger at God. That's the spiritual side. The physical side? My emotions? The loneliness ... trying to find my place ... the empty feeling ... finds me digging into God even more. I must admit that I've had days here & there when I was really quiet ... sort of wondering if I was in an emotional tornado. Then, I realize that I need more of God, so, I start talking to Him finding myself praising Him ... all based on the model of what God gave us in Psalms. The problem with my knee is much better, 90% better. I can take a slow walk now for about a half of a mile or about 1 KM. That helps so much ... stress reliever. I'm almost ready to return to the YMCA to do some light exercise. Well, this physical slowdown has played a part in my recent battle with my emotions. Message? God wanted me to release my stress & put it on His shoulders more than work it out through physical activity. God is at work in all of these things. Perhaps what I'm sharing will be of help to others. Hope so. Late June/Early July Update: High Blood Pressure issues slowed me down knocking me out of the first week in camp in Romania. I was in Budapest, Hungary, receiving medical care from my Chinese doctor there and she put me on blood pressure medication. Stress, loads of it for the last two years, caught up with me. She said that I was in danger of having an immediate stroke. Scary situation. I flew to Romania for Camp MIA and spoke to the camp counselors. After this I became very weak and received help from a Romanian doctor who put me on two more blood pressure meds. I called my Chinese doctor to report this and she agreed. The latest is that it has been reduced by 40 points, but, it’s not normal yet. Pray that I can speak during week two in camp. I’ll keep you posted. ON THE ROAD Last month I wrote that I spent 17 days with our Romanian director, Iulian Avramescu. After this he went to Dallas, Texas for a one month furlough to visit his supporters and ask people to help with his needs for the summer camps at LIFE Romania. So, I joined him for six days in Dallas to help him. 23 quality days of mentoring, fellowship and more … the model that the Apostle Paul used with those who traveled with him … I love it. Then, I traveled to Indianapolis to do some marriage counseling with a couple. The young lady came to our ministry in Hungary during her childhood, so, we “go way back”. They want me to perform their wedding ceremony on August 31, so, I will return to Indy after the summer camp season in Europe. While I was in Indiana I spent time with young men to cast a vision for LIFE asking them to join this vision not only in Europe, but also, in Costa Rica which will kick off their “summer” camp season in January. Then, I talked about Cuba, Columbia in South America, Bosnia and Albania in Europe … nothing there yet as far as Life Impact For Eternity is concerned … I was sharing my dreams. I have a passion to involve young adults to get them involved … their time, their talents, their brains and their hearts. This is burning inside of me! Join me in prayer for this. --Great Trip Thru Hungary, Bosnia, Montenegro and Romania --Lump In My Throat --What’s Up? GREAT TRIP THRU HUNGARY, CROATIA, BOSNIA, MONTENEGRO, SERBIA AND ROMANIA Iulian Avramescu, our director in Romania, summed it up quite well with his post on Facebook, “I felt like I was living in the Book of Acts.” Iulian and his young team member, Luca, a pro soccer player, met me in Hungary and the three of us went on a whirlwind trip through five countries. Returning to my old haunts at Word of Life Hungary to speak in chapel at the Bible Institute I had an incredible time speaking to the students there. What great potential! It was good to fellowship with former staff members and make new friends. God is blessing the work there. With Iulian at the wheel and with me rubbing my knee [oh, the pain … hurt my knee traveling to our Board of Directors meeting in March … something moved out of joint during the trip … still bothering me into early May … please pray] we headed south to spend the night is Sarajevo, Bosnia. I still remember the bombing and shelling in 1993 during the war between Serbia and Bosnia as Lynne and I traveled through there. What a change from those days. One thing that we noticed as we drove through thru small towns … each had a mosque and a tall minaret [from the Arabic word meaning “lighthouse”, a tall obelisk or tower] … funded by the Saudi Arabians … some were not being used, but, ready to be used when a Muslim priest can come to live there. We thought about how many towns do not have a Gospel preaching church. What a dilemma. It’s been two years since I have been in Montenegro. What a joy to return to see friends and work on details for Camp Monty 2014. I was so excited to be there again. God blessed the preaching of His Word in the churches in Niksic and Podgorica as I shared Biblical principles regarding the theme of grief. Then, I had an opportunity to speak to university students in Niksic led by our good friend, Danijel Petkovski, who helps us at Camp Monty. Three of the students received Christ and we had great conversations with other students after the meeting. Danijel is doing a great job. It was so good to spend time with Sasha Olah, team member for LIFE Montenegro and Camp Monty. It has been through some tough times with physical injuries which adversely affects his outreach ministry as a soccer coach and player. Pray for Sasha as he meets with guys who come to Camp Monty. Then need encouragement and discipleship. I am so thankful to have Sasha on our team. Traveling northward through the mountains was quite an experience. Iulian and Luca enjoyed the scenic beauty from the front seat of the van and I saw the peaks from my vantage point in the back seat as I lay on my back taking pressure off of my knee. God blessed my ministry during this trip, but, the physical situation was quite difficult. Quite the contrast! Oh yes, the roads in Serbia … bumpy beyond measure. Iulian wants to buy another GPS. It seems that his old one gave us an extended trip adding a couple of hours to the travel schedule. Finally, we arrived at the border of Romania crossing the Danube River as Iulian and Luca were yelling and shouting. It was quite a trip … Next on the agenda was Counselor Training for our youth camp at LIFE Romania. We have several new counselors to join a great core group of returning camp counselors. Sorry, I know I use certain words again and again … here I go again … I was “revved up”! Well, except for my knee. I just slid my right knee and leg along as I moved about when I was speaking. It didn’t affect my spirit and attitude. God was at work in those meetings. Potential, more potential! These young Romanians are awesome. Iulian is doing a marvelous job building a young team which includes camp leaders or staff along with the counselors. This leads me to the next meetings following the Counselor Training. Most of Iulian’s young team stayed for three days for a staff meeting. We took some time to see the famous Peles Castle in Sinaia, Romania, where the Romanian royalty lived. Each day Iulian asked me to speak to the leadership team, then, they worked on projects, practical things to improve the ministry. Three worked on scheduling and organization while two worked on the website, greatly improved with a new, enhanced look. This gave Iulian and I time to work on a project of our own. Wow! So much was accomplished. Back to Bucharest from the Carpathian Mountains and Sinaia where I could make plans to change my travel schedule as I needed to return to the States. Originally, I had planned to be in Israel with Dr. Jimmy DeYoung and his sons for a tour of the Holy Land. My knee was too painful for the walking that I would be doing on this tour. Much to my regret I had to cancel my plans, yet, I know that God is in control and has reasons beyond what I can comprehend. Slowly, my knee is getting better since the special knee treatments that I received while I was in Montenegro. Perhaps it is 70% better now. Yet, as I look back on the trip through six countries in Europe I rejoice in what was accomplished. I thank God that Iulian was along to take good care of me and get me to where I needed to go despite his vagabond GPS. 17 days with Iulian was priceless … mentoring, discipleship, observation, conversations, fellowship … you name it, we did it … what an experience. I’m so encouraged. LUMP IN MY THROAT No, nothing wrong with my health … just had a big “lump in my throat” when I saw in Lynne’s piano in Niksic, Montenegro on my recent trip. I was speaking in the church in Niksic and noticed her piano sitting there. We brought it from Budapest last summer to have it available for Camp Monty and that it can be used at the church. But, the “lump” quickly disappeared when I thought that it is good that it is being used in God’s work. This is how I was raised, that is, if change has taken place and something is not being used, then, put it to good use somewhere. WHAT’S UP? Ministry with Iulian in Dallas, Texas where he has his support and prayer base—this is next. This is an important part of my ministry just like the 17 days being together in Europe. I love evangelism, but, I cannot do this all of the time. So, I spend time behind the scenes with a young man like Iulian, 33 years of age. Let’s put it this way, “I’ve been there and done that, now, it’s time to teach someone else to go there and do that!” I love doing this! --LIFE Costa Rica … A New Opportunity! --Back to Europe --Wave of Grief LIFE COSTA RICA … A NEW OPPORTUNITY! Thinking back to January when I spoke at a youth camp in Costa Rica where every single camper came to Christ other things were happening during that time. A dear friend from way back, Eddy Vidaechea along with his wife Silvia, and I were talking … dreaming … planning … praying. Lynne and I had the privilege of having this couple in our home when they were first starting their ministry as they traveled in the States raising their support. We had a great time of fellowship back then … around 28 years ago. There was a little boy with them, Cristian, who was about seven years old. Eddy and I have kept in contact for years and Cristian came into the picture after he finished his education joining his father in the work in Costa Rica. About six years ago Eddy began to focus on the real passion in his life which is church planting. You need to know that Eddy has been doing this while he battles Lou Gehrig’s disease. Yes, it’s quite a story. God has kept him alive and also helped Silvia who has had serious problems with her eyes. For some time I wanted to go there to connect with them and help them. There was a plan to do this in January, 2013, but, I did not have peace to do this at that time as Lynne was struggling so much with MS. But, we made a plan for me to go there in January, 2014. Somehow, some way, I felt peace to put this into my schedule. Seems that God had this planned all along because He called Lynne to Heaven in December … about five weeks before my trip to Costa Rica. Talk about timing … it was of God … His plan, His timing. Cristian and I have been talking about working together for a year, maybe longer. Because of Lynne’s situation I delayed this partnership because I did not think that I had the time to devote to this. He was very patient … waiting to serve together when the timing was right. The conversations in January included Cristian. He was ready to go anywhere I that I would advise him to go. Much to his surprise I told him to stay in Costa Rica because God put this on my heart. It has been on my mind to develop a ministry where we can do youth camps in January. That’s the month that Costa Ricans use to have such youth programs because school is not in session at that time of the year. Furthermore, I love to see churches started … God put a pioneering spirit inside of me. We will start new churches in Costa Rica. We will start the first LIFE Costa Rica youth camp on January 5, 2015, God willing. In fact, on March 15, 2014, our Board of Directors approved the Costa Rica as a new field … a new opportunity. Cristian Vidaechea will direct the work there and I will mentor him. Pray for God’s blessing and direction. BACK TO EUROPE This Sunday, March 30, I will be with our music group, The Hungarian Brass, in Vac, Hungary for a concert and evangelism. Back to Europe! Back to Hungary! The plan is to return to my former ministry to speak in chapel at the Word of Life Bible Institute and connect with students and staff. Then, to Montenegro with Iulian, our director at LIFE Romania, and one of his team members, to organize for Camp Monty, speak in two churches and hang out with campers. Next, we go to Targoviste, Romania where I will speak at the Camp Counselor Training. We have some new counselors and I can hardly wait to meet them. Staff meetings are planned after this before I travel to Israel to be with Jimmy DeYoung Sr. and Jimmy Jr. on a Holy Land Tour. I’ve wanted to do this for years but could not because of Lynne’s struggles with MS. Rick DeYoung, our Camp Monty Director and son of the DeYoungs, will be on this trip as well. I am quite excited about the teaching as well as seeing many Biblical sites. Jimmy DeYoung Sr. is the premier expert in the world on the Holy Land and Biblical prophecy. And, Jimmy Jr. is close on his father’s heels as a highly qualified prophecy teacher. Flying to Dallas, Texas after this where I will help our Romania Director as he will be stateside to promote his summer ministry, Camp MIA, will conclude my whirlwind trip through Europe, Israel and Texas. I will be organizing some teams to come to our camps in Romania and Montenegro before I return to Europe for the summer camps on June 23. Pray for safety in travel, good health and clarity as I will be speaking in many meetings. WAVE OF GRIEF Dear friends who have experienced the loss of loved ones warned me that I will have a “wave of grief” every so often. It’s hard to explain what this is like if you have never had this happen to you. Stunning, it’s emotional, yet, it’s spiritual. Sort of like a moment of darkness … hits you like a stepping from behind a shelter into a gale of wind … it stops you in your tracks like you just felt a blast of something … whoa! The first thought is either “What just happened to me?” or “Where did THAT come from?” It’s part of the grieving process. Within a couple of seconds my right hand is in the air as I praise God for taking Lynne home to Heaven. I thank Him that she is not suffering … that is happy beyond measure. Then, a smile is on my face as I am so happy for Lynne. It’s amazing how God helps me. Hundreds are praying, no, thousands are praying for me. For example, more than 300 people at one church have committed to pray for me on a daily basis. This helps me so, so much. I just wanted you to know that the first 120 days or so that God has sustained me and helped me. I am grateful for God’s help. Thank YOU for praying … thank you so much! Lynne’s name as well as her important role in our mission is being remembered through the Lynne Murphy Memorial Fund for Needy Campers. COSTA RICA RENDEZVOUS: Part One
Connecting with dear friends, Eddy & Silvia Vidaechea and their son, Cristian & his wife, Ale, plans were made for me to speak in two churches that Pastor Eddy had planted and at a teen youth camp. I asked if they could find a place for me in the mountains above San Jose, the capital city. The need to “get away” was strong as it had only been about 40 days since my dear Lynne had passed. It was just what I needed … a rustic mountain hotel … very little English spoken … good Costa Rican food … and sleep. Sleep? I must have been exhausted and drained emotionally because I slept the better part of three days. It reminded me of God putting Elijah to sleep. God really knows what we need. The final two and a half days were so special because I had my rest and my focus was upon God. I recalled that I had made a “prayer mind map” a number of years ago, so, I outlined my prayer requests on paper. I was totally involved, zeroed in on prayer … it was an incredible experience. My talks with God brought me into a close presence or nearness to God. I poured my heart out to God and it was as though He was there with me. This “mountain top” experience electrified me … I came off of that mountain “on fire”. Words fail me to adequately express what I would like to tell you . . . Rendezvous? Very appropriate word to use … I had a meeting with God. Better yet, God had a meeting with me! COSTA RICA RENDEZVOUS: Part Two Speaking at the El Lugar Church in San Jose, Costa Rica, God used what He had taught me through Lynne’s suffering and homegoing to encourage the believers. It was a great service … a special time. The next day I was taken to Camp Brittney where I spoke to 68 inner city teens from broken homes … youth who had suffered abuse, disappointment and unreal pressures … every single one of them received Christ … all 68! Did I tell you that I was “on fire”? Well, it was not “me”, it was God working through me. Then, at the Campfire Service, all 68 dedicated their lives to God stating that they are willing to do whatever God would have them to do. Incredible! By the way, I picked up one of the small sticks to throw into the fire just like the teens. Through my translator, a wonderful young man brimming with potential, I said something to this effect, “Just because Lynne has passed … nothing has changed … I am totally committed to God … willing to do whatever He would have me to do.” My translator joined with me in this as he picked up a stick. The teens were pressing on us as though each of them wanted to be the first to cast his or her stick into the fire to symbolize that are giving their lives to God. Oh dear friend, THAT was a special moment. A male social worker came with one of the group of troubled teens to be with them at the camp. His life was changed as well as he received Christ. What a change in his countenance by the end of the week. Also, a 9 year old boy, son of one of the camp staff families, made this decision as well. An attractive girl, around 17, wore an elastic sleeve over her upper arm during the camp. During a volleyball game I noticed that this sleeve had worked its way down her arm somewhat exposing a severe skin condition. Later that day the camp director told me her story. I was aghast! A man in her section of San Jose, sort of like a mafia leader [not mafia, but, a tough, evil man who controlled that section of the city] told this girl that he wanted her, but, she refused only to be horribly abused by the anger of the mean man as he threw acid on her arm. The girl’s camp counselor had explained that there were holes in her arm all the way to the bone … her arm was emaciated. Well, this poor girl would hardly look at me or at the camp director at the beginning of the camp. Who could she trust? She received Christ and she dedicated her life to God … what a difference in her spirit as it showed on her face with a beautiful smile … what a change. Pray for her as her parents are too afraid to go to the police because they know that this vicious man will attempt to kill them. On the positive side, let’s praise God for His grace to reach out to this young lady and all of the other troubled youth. Seven of the camp counselors come from these violent areas in San Jose. Boy, they really connected with these teens because they see the difference in these counselors knowing that they truly understand what the teens have to deal with when they return home. These counselors and others are already involved in follow up work to encourage these new young believers. Pray for this. There is a “Costa Rica Rendezvous: Part Three” … wait, I can’t tell you about this just yet … stay tuned. SAN DIEGO ENDEAVOR: Rendezvous … now endeavor … here’s the story … last summer a man, Bill Evans, and his son, Brad, made a father-son trip joining Rick DeYoung, Brad’s business partner, at Camp Monty in Montenegro. They coached baseball, yes, good, ol’ American baseball demonstrating this sport to young Montenegrins. The youth loved the sport which made Bill and Brad very happy. Bill wants to share the blessing with others in his area in California, north of San Diego, in Carlsbad and Solana Beach. He organized meetings for Rick, who is directing Camp Monty, and me … lots of meetings … plenty of great conversations. I had the privilege of speaking to the Band of Brothers, a group of men committed to pray and to encourage each other … what a receptive group! Now, Bill has a group of 12 or so, maybe more, who are talking about joining him at Camp Monty 2014. Quite an endeavor! PRINCETON NJ [No, Not the University] From San Diego to Philadelphia [what a change in weather] I flew from sunny California to the snowy, cold Northeast finally arriving in Princeton, NJ. Two churches in that area are interested in bringing teams to Montenegro this summer. Mitar Rudanovic, youth pastor and of Montegrin heritage, came last summer with his young people. A former star football player at Rutgers, he introduced American football to a soccer crazed nation and they loved him. I spoke to his young people giving an invitation for them to dedicate their lives to God just like the 68 Costa Rican did. Nine of them made this commitment! Pastor Andrew Straubel is organizing a group from his church at Windsor Chapel. What a great time of fellowship with this pastor and his people. It will be great to see what God does with those who come with him to Montenegro. It’s always a win-win situation … a winner for the group coming over with spiritual growth in each person’s life and a winner for the youth of the country. LET’S NOT FORGET ?? LIFE Romania! Last month I met with two churches in West Virginia who are planning to come to Camp MIA this summer. Both groups are working hard to get ready and I will connect with them soon. Director Iulian Avramescu had a Sports Rally in Dambovita, Romania seeing seven soccer players coming to Christ. Some of them had never heard the Gospel before. Iulian and his team will have another Sports Rally in Pitesti on Feb 21-23. Pray for a good response to the message of God’s love. SUBSTITUTE FAN: Calendar Seems like the page of the calendar go by so fast that it is a substitute for a fan … the days, the months and the years are flying by … faster and faster. But, I would not have it any other way. What fun! Another year older this month, but, it feels like 2014 is going to be an incredible year. As you have read the previous articles in this Update the year is off to a great start. The gang at LIFE Romania put together a special birthday tribute for yours truly. Click on it. --How is Eric doing? --What is Eric doing? HOW IS ERIC DOING? Probably this question has crossed your mind more than once since Lynne went to be with the Lord on December 5, 2013. Here’s your answer—Eric is doing just fine. God has been faithfully meeting my needs … encouraging me … giving me strength. Only God knows how many people have been praying. All of these prayers have been answered in a mighty way. Thank you for praying. Yes, Lynne is greatly missed … no doubt about it. There have been a couple of waves of grief, but, my habit is to take it to the Lord in prayer just as David showed in the Book of Psalms. He concluded by giving praise to God after pouring out his problems. What a great example! Furthermore, after watching Lynne suffering so badly I thank God for taking her home. Her last year or two of life was a tough, horrible experience. No more pain! No more suffering! She is happy in the presence of God and with many loved ones who have passed on before her. What an incredible experience for dear Lynne. How is Eric doing? Great! Better yet, how is Lynne doing? Much better than Eric! WHAT IS ERIC DOING? Next on the agenda is the opportunity to speak at a teenager youth camp in Costa Rica. Pray that God will bless the preaching of His Word. Eight times to speak is on the schedule … I am so excited. Plus, God willing, I will be speaking in one or two Costa Rican churches one of which was started by dear friend, Eddy Vidaechea. Pray for Eddy and Silvia, his wife, as they struggle with devastating health issues. God is using both of them despite all of the suffering that they endure. This summer I plan to be involved with Camp Monty in Montenegro as well as Camp MIA in Romania. Plans call for me to be at the first two weeks in Romania, starting in late June, then, two weeks in Montenegro before returning to Romania for the final two weeks of camp there. So, there are at least three groups planning to be involved with Camp Monty and I will go to these churches to speak and to lead training sessions. One will be in the North County section of San Diego County in California and the other two in New Jersey. Recently, I met with two groups in West Virginia who are planning to serve at Camp MIA in Romania this summer during the final two weeks of the camp season. Behind the scenes meetings and training now will produce much fruit during the summer camp ministry. Mentoring … I love to meet with young men who have a heart for God. Three such meetings with three men in their early 40s seemed to be encouraging for each of these men. They have so much potential. Pray for some future conversations with three other men who want to serve with us in our mission. We shall see what God has in mind for each of these men. Another prayer request is for at least one more team to come together to help us in the youth camp in Romania this summer. At least four or five people are needed, eight to ten is even better, to teach conversational English, do sports training and spend time with the campers. Could you organize a team? Seriously, would you be interested? Contact me at 321 663 5710 or email me at one of the email addresses below at the bottom of the page. It will be a life changing experience!
